FINISHING STRONG: HOW SCHOOL COUNSELORS SUPPORT STUDENTS AND STAFF AT YEAR’S END

As the final weeks of school approach, the energy in the building shifts. For some students, it’s excitement. For others, anxiety. And for staff, it’s often a blend of exhaustion and anticipation. The end of the school year is a uniquely emotional time, and one where school counselors can make a powerful difference. Here’s how we, as school counselors, can support both students and staff in wrapping up the year well.

🎓 Supporting Students: Ending with Care and Confidence

1. Addressing Transitions
Whether students are moving up a grade, switching schools, or graduating, transitions can stir up big feelings. Counselors can:

  • Offer classroom lessons or small groups on coping with change
  • Host “move-up” activities to familiarize students with next steps
  • Check in one-on-one with students expressing uncertainty or fear

2. Promoting Reflection and Closure
The end of the year is a natural time for reflection. Counselors can help students:

  • Reflect on growth and goals met
  • Create memory projects or “letters to my future self”
  • Acknowledge strengths and resilience built over the year

3. Supporting Mental Health and Stress
Finals, grades, peer conflicts, and home life can all collide in May and June. It’s essential that students feel emotionally supported.

  • Offer open office hours or drop-in support
  • Teach mindfulness or relaxation strategies
  • Advocate for grace and flexibility where needed

👥 Supporting Staff: Partnering with Empathy and Encouragement

1. Recognizing Burnout and Stress
Educators are pouring every last ounce of energy into finishing strong. Counselors can:

  • Offer stress-relief tools or quick mindfulness sessions
  • Leave uplifting notes or self-care tips in staff mailboxes
  • Simply check in with a “How are you really doing?”

2. Facilitating Positive Closure
Help staff focus on the growth and impact they’ve made by:

  • Encouraging end-of-year team reflections or celebrations
  • Sharing student “thank you” notes or success stories
  • Recognizing milestones and efforts in staff meetings

3. Collaborating for Student Success
As teachers wrap up grades and plan for next year, counselors can:

  • Provide input on student placement, support needs, or SEL growth
  • Offer insights on students who may benefit from summer programming
  • Collaborate on plans for easing tough transitions

💛 Finishing Strong Is a Team Effort

The end of the school year is more than a countdown—it’s a culmination. As counselors, we have a unique opportunity to ensure that students and staff don’t just finish, but finish feeling seen, supported, and successful.

With empathy, presence, and a steady hand, we can help create a meaningful close to the year—and a hopeful bridge to what’s next.

About Susan Rose

I'm Susan Rose, offering support in School Counseling and Grief Coaching. In School Counseling, I am a school counselor turned counselor educator, professor, and author helping educators and parents to build social, emotional, and academic growth in ALL kids! The school counseling blog delivers both advocacy as well as strategies to help you deliver your best school counseling program. In grief support, I’m a mother, grandmother, professor, author, and wife (I’ll always be his). Until October 20, 2020, I lived with my husband, Robert (Bob) Rose, in Louisville, Ky. On that awful day of October 20,2020, my life profoundly changed, when this amazing man went on to Heaven. Married so young, we literally grew up together. We raised a family together and had a wonderful journey. We weren’t ready for it to be over! After Bob moved to Heaven, I embraced my love of writing as an outlet for grief. I know this is God leading me to honor Bob through using my background and experience to fulfill a new life purpose. Hence, this site is my attempt to share what I learned as a Counselor in education with what I am learning through this experience of walking this earth without him. My mission is to help those in grief move forward to see joy beyond this most painful time.
