RESEARCH MATTERS MOST WHEN IT HELPS US BETTER UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE AND PRACTICES BEHIND THE DATA.

Throughout my career as a school counselor, counselor educator, professor, and educational leader, research has provided a way to ask important questions, examine professional practice, and better understand the conditions that help students and schools thrive. This collection brings together scholarly work developed from that continuing commitment to connecting research with practice.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR PERCEPTIONS & COMPETENCIES FOR CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP

Examining the role of school counselor knowledge, preparation, and professional practice in supporting equitable student success.

This study examined school counselors' perceptions of their influence on closing the achievement gap, including the relationships among counselor role alignment, leadership confidence, advocacy beliefs, and social-emotional learning. Drawing on responses from 698 certified school counselors across Kentucky, the study explored how counselors perceive their ability to support academic equity through comprehensive school counseling practice.

Findings point to an important gap between counselors' commitment to student success and their perceptions of professional influence. The results highlight the importance of counselor leadership, appropriate role alignment, and comprehensive school counseling practice in strengthening counselors' capacity to support equitable student outcomes.
