Grounded in Purpose. Guided by Professional Principles. Centered on Students.

School counseling is more than a collection of responsibilities, programs, or interventions. It is a profession grounded in ethical practice, informed by an understanding of student development, and committed to supporting the academic, social-emotional, and mental health needs of students.

School Counseling Today brings together professional perspectives, research-informed discussions, practical insights, and advocacy resources that explore both the enduring foundations of school counseling and the changing realities of today's schools.

At the heart of this collection is a guiding belief: Purpose precedes practice. Understanding why we serve students, what our professional responsibilities require, and how students develop provides the foundation for making thoughtful decisions about the work we do.

The articles are organized into four interconnected collections, each offering a different perspective on the school counselor's role in supporting students and strengthening schools.

THE COUNSELING TODAY ARCHIVES

Preserving the professional writing that brought us here.

Worthwhile ideas don't necessarily have an expiration date. While the four collections above organize articles by professional purpose and topic, these archives preserve the chronological history of Counseling Today and the ideas, experiences, and conversations that have shaped its development.

Counseling Today has been part of my professional work for more than two decades. The digital archive begins in 2020, when the earlier site was intentionally culled and rebuilt on WordPress. Although it does not represent every piece published over the years, it preserves the writing that was carried forward and the work that followed.

Browse the archives by year to revisit earlier perspectives, trace the development of ideas, and explore the continuing conversation about school counseling, student well-being, and whole-child development.

WELCOME AGAIN!

2021–2023 | A Season of Change

Following the loss of my husband in October 2020, my professional writing largely gave way to a different kind of writing and a different kind of work. During these years, Profoundly Changed became the place where I wrote through grief, faith, loss, and healing. Counseling Today remained part of who I was, but for a time, my attention needed to be elsewhere.

In 2024, I began writing professionally again, bringing with me perspectives shaped not only by my work as a counselor educator, but also by what those years had taught me about grief, resilience, and the whole person.

WELCOME! I’M SO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU JOIN ME!

The current Counseling Today digital archive begins in 2020. While my husband and I spent much of that spring and summer in the hospital, we decided together that rebuilding Counseling Today would give me meaningful work to focus on. From my laptop in his hospital room, I revisited the earlier Wix site, selected material to carry forward, and began rebuilding Counseling Today on WordPress. These 2020 posts reflect the conversations, concerns, and professional perspectives that shaped the beginning of this collection. Preserved in their original context, they offer a glimpse into the development of ideas that continue to inform my work in school counseling, student well-being, and whole-child development.
