It gives me great comfort to know that Bob and Daddy (and Granny, Grampsy, and others I have loved) are actually higher than the angels now. The idea that believers in Christ are elevated to a position superior to the angels in Heaven is both humbling and awe-inspiring. Contrary to common depictions, we do not become angels when we enter Heaven. Angels are a separate and distinct creation. As believers and followers of Christ, we hold a unique position, one that reflects God’s immeasurable grace and love.
At the moment of salvation, we were spiritually raised and seated with the Lord Jesus in Heaven. The Apostle Paul beautifully expresses this truth in Ephesians 2:6-7: “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.” This scripture reminds us that our spiritual position is not one of servitude but of honor. As co-heirs with Christ, we share in His authority and glory.
Colossians 3:1-4 reinforces this idea: “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
The Bible provides clarity on the role of angels. Hebrews 1:14 states: “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Angels are God’s messengers and servants, sent to assist and minister to believers. This reveals not only their purpose but also our importance in God’s eyes. While angels are powerful and majestic beings, their role is to serve, while our role as believers is to reign with Christ.
Dr. Billy Graham provided further insight into this truth: “The truth is, when we die and go to heaven, we become even greater than the angels! The angels are spiritual beings who were created by God to be His servants, and God has given them great authority and power to do His will. And at the present time, the angels are greater than we are, because God made us (as humans) 'a little lower than the heavenly beings' (Psalm 8:5). But the Bible also says that in heaven we will be higher than the angels—and the reason is because we will be like Christ. The Bible says, 'Do you not know that we will judge angels?' (1 Corinthians 6:3). Although that verse may be referring to the rebellious angels who chose to follow Satan, it still implies that our status after death will be above that of the angels.”
Our loved ones who have gone before us are not only in the presence of God but are walking on streets of gold, enjoying the fullness of His glory. This thought brings immeasurable comfort and hope, especially in times of grief. The joy they experience now is far beyond what we can imagine, and their elevated position reflects the riches of God’s grace and love.
Understanding our position in Heaven encourages us to live with an eternal perspective. The trials and sorrows of this life are temporary compared to the glory that awaits us. As Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:17: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”
The promise of being raised and seated with Christ is a profound reminder of God’s immense love for us. Knowing that we hold a position higher than the angels fills our hearts with gratitude and anticipation. Our loved ones in Heaven are not just at peace; they are in glory, experiencing the fullness of God’s presence. This truth not only comforts us in our grief but also inspires us to live lives worthy of our calling, with our hearts set on things above.

I'm a mother, grandmother, professor, author, and wife (I'll always be his). Until October 20, 2020, I lived with my husband, Robert (Bob) Rose, in Louisville, Ky. On that awful day of October 20,2020, my life profoundly changed, when this amazing man went on to Heaven. After Bob moved to Heaven, I embraced my love of writing as an outlet for grief. Hence, the Grief Blog is my attempt to share what I learned as a Counselor in education with what I am learning through this experience of walking this earth without him. My mission is to help those in grief move forward to see joy beyond this most painful time.
